Parallel ports can also be unidirectional or bidirectional. A unidirecitonal port can only send data one way, out to the peripheral device. The bi-directional port allows the peripheral device to communicate back to the PC like a printer being out of paper.

The bi-directional parallel port was introduced in 1987. All PCs manufactured after this date have this type of parallel port.
